High School Fisheries Internship Opportunity

POSITION:  High School Fisheries Intern

DURATION:  ~10 weeks/Mid-May through late-July


  • Conduct weekly subsistence harvest surveys at Bethel area fish camps and at the Bethel boat harbor
    • Enter data in electronic database
    • Compile reports utilizing data collected
    • Present at least one data summary a public fisheries management meeting
  • Train interested fishers to collect Chinook salmon age, sex and length biological samples
  • Distribute salmon from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) Bethel Test Fishery to elderly, disabled and widows
  • Assist with connex inventory and end-of-season cleaning and organization
  • Develop other skillsets by participating in at least one other fisheries project with ONC partners
    • ADF&G Bethel Test Fishery & Sonar project
    • Indigenizing Salmon Management Project
    • Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge Fish Preservation Project
    • Weir projects
  • Possibly assist with planning and oversight of youth at natural resource based career exploration program
  • Share internship experience with KYUK radio station or Delta Discovery
  • Create and give presentation to ONC staff during the last week of the internship on summer experience (~10-12 minute presentation)

QUALIFICATIONS:  A valid driver’s license is preferred. The candidate must be at least 16 years of age, in good physical condition, have good verbal and written communication skills, and be willing to work odd, long hours and weekends as necessary to achieve timely work objectives. Candidates who speak the Yu’pik language, are from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Region and possess the skill sets to operate an outboard motor and skiff safely are highly preferred.

SALARY: $14-$17/hour DOE
