The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge (YDNWR) and Orutsararmiut Native Council (ONC) are seeking 1-2 interns to assist with a cooperative Tree Swallow nest box monitoring program in Bethel, Alaska.  This project will be part of the Alaska Swallow Monitoring Network.

Position Description: The student biological internship program is a unique opportunity for either high school or college students to learn about scientific research, conservation, and/or environmental education.  The intern(s) will work alongside YDNWR/ONC biologists on our Tree Swallow nest box study. They will learn wildlife research skills as they track the timing and success of approximately 20-30 nesting pairs of Tree Swallows in Bethel. All training is provided for intern to successfully complete job duties.

Date of Internship: May 8-July 31, 2018

Time Commitment: Full-time/part-time. Interns must work a minimum of 85 hours during his/her internship.

Compensation: Stipend of $2500-$4500 DOE and availability

Duties: Set up new nest boxes, checking nest boxes for occupancy, monitoring nest boxes (including keeping accurate records of when eggs are laid, when they hatch, & when grown chicks first leave the nest); record number of eggs laid, chicks hatched, chick feeding rates; assist with capture and banding of adults and chicks; conducting data entry (maintain weather records and data sheets); and completing a final project.

Additional opportunities: Interns may also be responsible for working together to give a public presentation on their work.  Possible venues for this presentation include school science fairs, Alaska Forum on the Environment, and the Alaska Bird Conference.


Applicants should:

  • be at least 16 years old with valid driver’s license
  • have good communication skills, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude
  • be able to work independently and sometimes collect data on their own
  • be able to work well as part of a team
  • must complete any required training
